Happy 2019!

Now that the holidays are over and we have rung in 2019, the StartingBlock Team thought it would be a good time to take a look back at 2018 accomplishments and what is on the horizon for 2019.

2018 Highlights

We opened!

After five years of work, StartingBlock Madison opened its doors in June with a soft opening event where over 475 community members and partners in attendance.  A very special shout out to our founding parter organizations: gener8torDoyenne Group and Capital Entrepreneurs.

In October, American Family Insurance and StartingBlock officially opened the Spark Building!  A very special thank you to American Family Insurance, especially CEO Jack Salzwedel, for all you do and continue to do for the Madison community.

Since opening in June 2018, thirty early stage companies have joined the StartingBlock Community!

StartingBlock’s companies raised $12.7M in 2018.

These startups represent some of the most exciting, promising early stage startups in the area.  Collectively, these startups represent representing $50.6M in lifetime capital raised.  In 2018 alone, StartingBlock startups raised $12.7M in seed and venture funding, including the healthIT company, ImageMoverMD; skilled manufacturing talent finder, FactoryFix, the utility rebate platform, RebateBus; social music platform, LUM, and a new VR development company in the education space, Holos; grocery e-commerce platform, GrocerKey.

StartingBlock’s companies are growing.

LUMDigsiteImageMoverMDRebateBusBluDiagnosticsHolosPolcoPolitiscopeFactoryFix, and Stratus Silver Lining all added employees since joining StartingBlock.  Our Director of Talent, Lucas Frisbie, has our helped startups find and hire employees (his retention numbers are awesome and he can work with any startup who is ready to hire talent).  He’s launching our Spring SNAP which will “snaps” together students looking for startup experience with startups looking for student intern help.

and we’ve been busy!

We held 88 events and programs with 1500 participants at StartingBlock since June.This newsletter has become the Madison communities most comprehensive and consistent source of events and programs curated for the Madison Startup Community, with over 2,000 subscribers, 439 total events promoted for 92 different organizations at 77 different locations.

What’s up for 2019?

We are excited to expand our StartingBlock Community with space, programs and resources for Madison entrepreneurs.  You can join StartingBlock for as little as $150/month for an individual membership.  Need more space?  We have options up to 6,000 SF for the growing company and will be building out more space in 2019!

We are expanding our team and hiring a Program and Community Managerthat will allow us to increase the programs and events that StartingBlock can provide for the community, including demo days, pitch nights, and special community only events. So stay tuned.

We are also launching our Social Impact Initiative with eight social impact projects joining StartingBlock starting this January.  More on that in the new edition.So much is happening at StartingBlock!  Come by and check it out.  We are alway looking for committed entrepreneurs and partners who want to put Madison on the national map for innovation and entrepreneurship.  Our 2019 resolution is to create the meaningful intersections that cultivate entrepreneurs, accelerate startup growth, help drive innovation and build a startup ecosystem that gives back.
