Why StartingBlock
StartingBlock is Madison's only nonprofit coworking space and startup hub - a 501(c)3 built to support founders, not shareholders. Beyond desks and WiFi, you get direct office hours with WEDC, the UW-Madison Law & Entrepreneurship Clinic, and Investment Partners, plus a running calendar of community events like 1 Million Cups and our Lunch & Learn series. It's a workspace that's actually invested in your business succeeding.

Frequently asked questions
Can we grow into a bigger office later?
Yes — that is the point. Teams routinely start with a couple of reserved desks, move into Suite 237, and step up to 405 or 225 as they hire. You lease is flexible, so moving up means a new agreement, not a sublease and a lawyer. We will tell you honestly what is opening up next.
Do we have to be a startup to rent an office here?
No. Startups are the majority, but our members include remote teams, consultancies, nonprofits, agencies and satellite offices of larger companies. If you want a private office in downtown Madison and you are a good neighbor, you are a fit.
What does the monthly price actually cover?
Furniture, utilities, gigabit internet, cleaning, mail handling, conference room time, coffee and kitchen, 24/7 badge access, and every community event we run. There are no CAM charges, no build-out costs and no broker fee.
How does this compare to other small office space for rent in Madison, WI?
Traditional small-office listings downtown quote rent per square foot before utilities, internet, furniture and build-out, on a multi-year term. Our suites run $250–$300 per desk per month, all in. For a team of six to ten, that is usually the cheaper and much faster option.
Is it quiet enough for calls and focused work?
Your suite is a private room with a door, on a floor of private offices — not a seat on an open coworking floor. Phone booths and small meeting rooms are a few steps away for anything you would rather not take at your desk.
What about parking and transit?
The South Livingston parking ramp is across the street and there is street parking on the surrounding blocks. Several bus lines stop at the door, and the Capital City bike path runs right past the building with secure bike storage inside.
How fast can we move in?
Suites 225 and 405 are available now and have been moved into in under a week. Suite 237 opens September 1 and can be reserved before then. Book a tour and we will walk through timing.
Is there a commitment?
Day Passes have no long-term contracts. Flex Desks and Reserved Desks are month to month. Private Offices have a minimum of a 12 month commitment.
Is parking available?
Yes, there is free on street parking on both Main St and Livingston. We also offer discounted rates at the South Livingston Parking Ramp nearby.
Can I try it before joining?
Yes! We offer $20 day passes. Tour first, then try a day pass to see if you love it.
Where are you located?
821 East Washington Ave, Suite 200, Madison WI 53703.
What's included with membership?
Free WiFi, mailbox, bike storage with showers, discounted printing, and access to StartingBlock's community programming.
