The Artist In Residence here at StartingBlock, Sasha Debevec-McKenney!

Meet StartingBlock’s new Artist in Residence, Sasha Debevec-McKenney!

She is a poet whose work has appeared in The Yale Review, Nashville Review, Peach Mag, Underblong, TriQuarterly, Granta, and Poem-A-Day.

Sasha was also the 2020-2021 Jay C. and Ruth Halls Poetry Fellow at the University of Wisconsin Institute for Creative Writing and she received her MFA from New York University.

“When I’m at StartingBlock, my work takes on a higher sense of seriousness,” says Sasha.

“I try to think of myself as a business owner, too. I feel valued and secure. I feel more confident here that what I’m writing is worth writing, and (hopefully!) worth reading.

I’ve been writing poems since I was a teenager, and right now I’m trying to write non fiction—it’s been a huge adjustment, but having a quiet, serious space has made a huge difference in what I feel I can accomplish.”

Entrepreneurship is a creative endeavor which is why we are thrilled to offer Sasha’s expertise to benefit our entrepreneurial and creative members.

Thank you to Dane Arts for making this possible.

Welcome, Sasha!
